Photography studio donates to American Cancer Society

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

When Kim Box Photography officially opens in Troy on July 28, its reputation as a good community servant will precede it.

Melissa Bradford, president of the Pike County Relay for Life board of directors, said Box immediately came on board as a supporter of the American Cancer Society event.

“Between now and her grand opening, those who sign up for a photography session will pay only $50, which is half price,” Bradford said. “And, the session fee will be donated to the Pike County Chapter of Relay for Life.”

Bradford expressed appreciation to Box for supporting the Pike County Relay for Life campaign.

The 2009 Pike County Relay for Life culminating event won’t be until May but Bradford said the fight against cancer should be ongoing.

“Cancer doesn’t pick a time or a season,” she said. “So, we should Relay throughout the year. We are seeing more fundraising events for Relay being held before the official kickoff day and that is very encouraging.”

Bradford said the Kim Box grand opening promotion offers area residents an opportunity for a photography session at a great price, as well as an opportunity to support the Pike County Relay for Life’s 2009 fundraising campaign.

The photography studio is also offering those who attend the grand opening a chance to win a framed 16×20 fine art print.

Kim Box Photography is located on the corner of Market and Elm streets in Troy.

Olympus E420

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Choosing a digital camera has always been an exercise in compromise.

You could plump for a compact camera with all the advantages of portability and low cost but with the limited picture quality inherent in a small sensor.

Otherwise you could go for an SLR with all the advantages of a big sensor and interchangeable lenses but the definite drawbacks that come with greater size, weight and cost.

For many serious photographers the ideal solution was to buy one of each device - a small point-and-shoot camera to carry everywhere and an SLR with a selection of lenses for Photography with a capital P.

But now there is a new breed of camera that combines much of the best of both worlds. The Olympus E420 is the trailblazer of this new class of camera and can be best described as a “compact SLR”.

On first acquaintance, the E420 is almost unbelievably tiny. It tips the scales at 380 grams (which compares very favourably with Canon’s “serious” compact, the G9). When teamed up with the specially produced 25mm fixed lens it’s easy to believe Olympus’s boast that this is the smallest DSLR yet. Some questions have been raised about whether it is too small for big hands but, while my own hands are far from dainty, I didn’t have any problems.

Within this tiny package you get 2.7-inch LCD screen, incorporating live view. This allows you to frame shots and preview exposure in real time.

There is also a face-detect function and a very intuitive menu system. Under the bonnet is a 10-megapixel, four-thirds system sensor.

Image quality is superb, especially with the 25-millimetre prime lens. Digital noise is quite apparent at 800 ISO-plus but otherwise is very acceptable.

Image stabilisation would have been helpful, as would more than three auto-focus points. But, frankly, at this small price and size you can’t have everything.

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

By LESEGO MASEMOLA Jacaranda Children’s Home has been graced with a visit from Paris Hilton.

In South Africa for Friday night’s My Coke Fest at the Newmarket Racecourse, the glamorous blonde was given a warm welcome despite being late.

The children could not contain their excitement and had several pictures and various items ready for Hilton to autograph.

Hilton was affectionate, hugging and shaking hands with the children while photographers snapped away.

Some children she met said they would cherish the day and would not wash that night after touching the famous hotel heiress, reality TV actress and singer.

Hilton said she was delighted to be in South Africa.

“I love the accent here

. It is beautiful here and the weather is great,” she said.

Hilton said she adores children and had visited the home as part of an awareness campaign.

“All children need love, and a simple hug or kiss is all they need to see they are being loved. That is my gift to them,” she said.

As a token of appreciation the children gave Hilton an ostrich feather necklace and a bouquet of flowers.

“I like black because it goes with everything and pink is my favourite colour. Thank you,” she said of her gifts.

Elize Kerr, who works at the home, said: “It was a pleasure meeting her and for the children to meet her. I am very grateful.”

Ashley blasts paparazzi

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Ashley Olsen has blasted the paparazzi - labelling them “weird and scary”.

Ashley, whose twin sister is Mary-Kate Olsen, has been famous since she was six-years-old but admits she still finds it difficult to deal with photographers following her.

She said: “Photographers started following us, all over Los Angeles. First it was weird and then it got scary. I’m only 5ft 1in. I’m tiny. And when you have this 6ft 5in dude coming after you, yelling inappropriate things, your instinct as a woman comes out. You feel like you’re being attacked.”

Girl powered

Monday, March 10th, 2008

By Helen Herimbi We’re on the red carpet of the Stars of Mzansi Awards. The who’s who of the industry glitter in their evening wear. Everyone clamours for Hip Hop Pantsula’s attention. Cameras flash and, just when I think I’ll need cornea replacements, the girl with the biggest, brightest smile struts her stuff on the carpet.

Miss South Africa Teen 2006, Zizo Beda - sporting a newly cropped hairdo - laughs with photographers and seems to float around on a ball of positive energy. Then something surprising happens, she walks off behind the press, grabs a microphone and gets ready to speak into a camera. Only this wasn’t good old Zizo giving “shout-outs to her peeps”; turns out Zizo is actually the newest addition to the YO.TV family.

The beauty queen, who aspires to be a journalist, presents on SABC 1’s Wildroom Girls, and was the kids programme’s roving reporter at the Stars. This got me thinking that TV, geared towards kids, has undergone a bit of a change in recent years and taken on a more feminine face. So why not get the girl who was considered the fairest (under 18, that is) in the land to serve as a role model for the young ‘uns?

Over on DStv’s Disney Channel, Hannah Montana continues to clone mini-mes of herself - if the premiere of her 3-D film is any indication, that is

. But as long as no one jumps up and down screaming, “When I grow up I want to be just like Britney Spears”, then I guess it’s okay.

While these programmes are fun to watch and girly in their very essence, they’re important in that they instil a great deal of girl power - goodness knows they’ll need it if they’re going to have to get a taxi at Joburg’s Noord Street taxi rank.

Another show that should be commended, in this particular genre, is etv’s Sistahood, which lives up to its self-explanatory title. The pow-wow magazine programme is packed with content girls appreciate and has been revamped for their benefit.

In addition, the show has acquired two fresh new faces; the globe-trotting Esmeralda Sayagues, who was born in Rome, as well as Hey SA’s Oletilwe Ramashala.

As well as being a breath of fresh air, these young women are good at what they do. From what we’ve seen, they will serve as shining examples to our nation’s growing girls.
