Photography keep her busy

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

As if being a pastor’s wife and stay-at-home mom weren’t enough to keep a person busy, Becky Soyster has also launched a career as a photographer.

Soyster, of Advanced Photography and Design, has done some outdoor scenic work on the Oregon coast and weddings in the Redmond area prior to moving to Grant County. She did the Boyers’ wedding in Monument and has two more wedding shoots scheduled this summer.

Outdoor portraits and events, scenery and weddings are her main photographic interests, she says. Soyster also says she would like to do more senior portraits.

She says that her husband Norman, pastor at Monument Bible Church, is very supportive of her photography business. And she likes the flexibility it affords, especially since she also homeschools their three young boys.

Samples of her work and numerous casual shots of their children - Levi, Benjamin and Samuel - fill the Soyster home, just outside of town.

Readers may recall an article in the Eagle a year ago about son Levi’s encoun-ter with a rattlesnake. Levi recovered from a snake-bite after emer-gency crews rushed him to the hospital in John Day and then on to Portland for treatment.

Soyster says that she has always enjoyed taking pictures. Now that she has a better camera, thanks to her husband, she is enjoying learning even more techniques and tricks of the trade. Of her natural talent, a friend from the coast once told her, “You don’t take pictures … you tell stories.”

She says that their family will also be featured in a story about pastors and their families in a future issue of Ruralite magazine.

Phlipot was born and raised in Oakwood. She graduated from Alter High School in 1989 and the University of Cincinnati in 1993. She graduated from the Western Academy of Photography in Victoria, B.C. Canada in 2001. Phlipot graduated at the top of her class and received top national awards for her photography upon graduation from Western Academy of Photography.

IACP has a worldwide membership of nearly 4,000 culinary professionals that encompasses over 35 countries, and is a “Who’s Who” in the world of food. Past members have included eminent culinarian, cookbook author and television personality, Julia

Child, who was an active member of IACP for nearly 25 years.

As a new member of IACP this was Phlipot’s first time attending the IACP conference.

This year’s photography exhibit challenged food photographers and stylists to capture motion and rhythm in a still photographic image by reflecting their personal interpretation of the exciting, hot and sassy workings of the kitchen to illustrate the theme, Rhythm on the Plate. Phlipot’s image titled, In the Kitchen, was selected “Best of Show” by a panel of distinguished judges to include prominent culinary historians, educators, representatives from publishing firms, public relations and marketing organizations. Phlipot captured this distinctive photograph at a private dinner party in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Other notable award recipients include Chuck Williams, founder of Williams Sonoma, who was awarded The Milestone Award and renowned Chef Paul Prudhomme, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award with the annual cookbook and Bert Greene Journalism Awards.

Along with the announcement of this prestigious award, a successful cookbook, “A Taste of Wyoming,” photographed by Phlipot, has recently been released by Farcountry Press.

This unique book is an upscale, hardcover cookbook that features signature recipes from distinctive inns, lodges, resorts, guest ranches, hotels, and restaurants in Wyoming. The traditional and gourmet recipes are complemented by beautiful color food and scenic photography, historical black and white photographs, interesting vignettes, poetry, and prose excerpts from notable Wyoming writers about food and western lifestyle.

Featured Image from the Quad City Photography Club

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

This month’s featured image was taken by club member Mark Rasmussen on a photography trip with his wife Christy to the Oregon coast in August 2006. The trip was a personal vacation chosen specifically for the time of year that the Oregon coast receives its clearest weather and during a week when low tide would occur around sunrise and sunset to maximize the photography opportunities.

The sunset colors on the evening that Mark created the image were superb. There was a very low tide on the beach at Bandon State Natural, which uncovered intriguing sand patterns alongside tidal pools that reflected the sunset’s beautiful features.

The colorful edge of the tidal pool draws the viewer’s eye into the image, all the while the reflected colors and delicate details dazzle, until discovering the unusual shape of the sea stacks silhouetted against the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the clouds reflecting a jubilant sunset.
